New Life

So the hatching begins......

Three weeks ago I was at Diane's and she said that Amelia had some eggs that she did not refrigerate and that as she was eaten prolly by a coon, do I want to borrow the brooder and try to hatch some eggs.  I said yes.  I brought the equipment down and started everything.  Out of seven eggs, turns out six were good, one was not fertilized.  One week into the brooder, Buffy gets broody and wants to sit in the coop all the time.  After some agonizing decisions, we put all 6 eggs under her and she was VERY happy.  Two days ago, one of the egg was badly broken, but the membrane not punctured, so we put it back in the brooder, and tried to hatch it.  As you can see, tried.  Yesterday it was moving about and doing well, as we didn't know if we should puncture the membrane or let the chick try it herself/himself.  Last night, in the middle of the night the chick died.  I buried it under the grape vine.

Yesterday, one little chick hatched.  It was yellow and black.  Today, two more hatched and they were more black than yellow.  There are still two more under her, with one partially zipped, and one still no noise.  At about 8 last night, we went ahead and switched the nesting boxes so now Buffy and her broods are in the little coop, and the other girls are in the big coop.  Hope there won't be any sleeping issues tonight.

Also I got some recipes for home made chicken feed and I went to Sprouts and bought the stuff and blended everything.  The big girls seem to like it too.
